February Book Club: The Great Gatsby

This month, my book club is reading the classic The Great Gatsby.

Originally I had a picture of the book here, and then I thought better of it, and replaced it with a picture of Leo.

The Great Gatsby was my pick; I`ve been meaning to read it for a while, and now that they are coming out with “movie versions” of the book with Leo’s picture on them, I have a reason to!

Do you belong to a book club?  If you are thinking of starting one, I highly recommend it.   Grab a group of your girlfriends, and embrace this excuse to get together to drink, eat yummy food & pretend to have read the book.

We usually have about 7 or 8 people at bookclub, and you are encouraged to come even if you haven`t read the book.  We rotate houses, and whoever is hosting usually provides the bulk of the food & drink as well as a list of questions about the book to get the conversation started.  Everyone else tends to bring along an simple app (think chips & salsa) or a bottle of wine.   It’s very casual- at the end of each meeting, we chat about what book we would like to read next, and pick next months date, book & host.  Then I immediately proceed to forget about book club until exactly one week before the next one, at which point I send out a panicked email asking “Is NEXT week book club? Has anyone read the book yet?” and have to speed-read the book in a week.  Or at least thoroughly Google it so I seem to know what I am talking about. Just kidding, I do read the books (usually).

So far, we have read:

  • Life of Pi
  • Let’s Pretend this Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir by the Blogess
  • The Hunger Games
  • Flowers for Algernon
  • How to Be a Woman
  • Into the Wild
  • The Yiddish Policeman’s Union
  • Unless by Carol Shields

My favorite was the Hunger Games.  It was my pick, and at the time, I had no idea what it was about- I just knew it was popular.  When I started reading it, I was embarrassed- I hadn`t realized that it was a young adult book!  But we ended up having a ton to talk about, and we generally try to stick with shorter, easy to read books anyhow so  that everyone will have the time to finish the book with the month.  Anything goes really, because it’s only partly about the book, and mostly about an excuse for a consistent, monthly girls night!
